In addition to the Sea of Cortez and its abundance of
marine life, the surrounding desert is a unique and
beautiful ecosystem full of surprises. Over the
centuries, its flora and fauna have evolved endemic characteristics due to their relative isolation. North
of La Paz huge cave paintings are all that remain of
a band of hunter-gatherer nomads that inhabited the
area 10,000 years ago. To the south, the Sierra de la
Laguna Mountains rise from sea level to more than
6,000 feet and back again, separating the
Sea of Cortez from the Pacific Ocean on a
narrow portion of the peninsula less than
sixty miles wide.
